Techno-Structuration: Methodological considerations of implementation of geographical information systems for Land Use planning - The case of Costa Rica

Abstract
Many institutional GIS-projects faced problems during implementation. Since the second half of the nineties implementation studies have focussed on management and organisational aspects of GIS implementation. Although the studies gave more insights in the complexness of organisational functioning, they were weak in explaining why certain GIS implementations have been successful and others failed. In a poster presentation I will present a new methodological approach to GIS implementation drawn from social theories of technology development. After presenting the ‘techno-structuration approach’ I will show its successfulness in explaining GIS implementation in a flow chart of a Costa Rican case study.
