Survey on Possible CEOS Agency Support for EO Training/Education Activites

Earth observation technology and its applications are rapidly changing with the emergence of newer technology solutions to handle the variety of data sets available from satellites. The emergence of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is opening up new vistas for merging satellite images with other map data sets to arrive at newer visualisation of spatial information. The position information available from Global Positioning Systems (GPS), when merged with the satellite images and GIS databases, provides unique opportunities for very precise locale level solutions for development. With the advent of these technologies and solutions, developing countries can benefit by adopting these and other technology for addressing the problems of their developmental process.

CEOS has realized that EO education holds the key to future EO technology development and its applications and thus EO education and training needs to become an essential element in this competitive world. CEOS, in its 13th Plenary at Stockholm, established the ad-hoc Working Group on Education and Training (WGEdu) to prepare a strategy for CEOS future activities in education and training in Developing Countries, in time for consideration at 14th Plenary - at which time Members and Associates will be invited to consider commitments.

Realising that many space agencies have made considerable efforts in EO education, training and technology transfer - both at national and international level and also that large amount of training materials and teaching aids have been developed by various space agencies, CEOS WGEdu has decided to conduct a comprehensive survey of what space agencies have already done/would like to do for EO Education and Training. The survey will enable the CEOS WGEdu to make an assessment of what efforts CEOS can do for EO Education and efforts. The survey will be used to recommend a collective effort of CEOS based on the feedback from CEOS space agencies. The results of the survey will form a part of the report of CEOS WGEdu to CEOS Plenary and this will be presented at 14th Plenary.

CEOS WGEdu requests CEOS Members and Associates to assist in this endeavor.
