Abstract Coastal natural hazard vulnerability assessment for Indian coastal zone is carried out based on on-spot surveys, collation, evaluation, interpretation of information concerning both direct and indirect losses and short and long-term effects pertaining to natural environment. Virtual GIS model for natural hazard vulnerability assessment in Indian coastal zone is developed by using ArcGIS, ArcIMS, ArcSDE, Java, Visual basic and many other interface toolkits. This virtual model on natural hazard vulnerability will serve as a baseline design, fabrication and installation toolkit for establishing GIS based information network. This interdisciplinary study is carried out by obtaining heuristic information from software, structural, electrical, instrumentation and marine engineers, and also by involving environment and geo-scientists. Geodatabase development, design, fabrication and execution of the virtual GIS model were also briefly discussed.
