Map generation on Earth Science themes has taken rapid and long leaps in GSI in the last decade from conventional mode to GIS-enabled mode. Specially trained geological professionals are involved in GIS-enabled map generation. This ensures quality map products of international standards, both in terms of map-content and print quality.
While software and print supports to map generation are offered by Map Printing Division located at Hyderabad compilation and digitization of maps take place at about twenty regional/operational units. GSI has evolved a system of map generation monitored and orchestrated centrally at its CHQ (Kolkata), which ensures uniform standards for specific theme, unified legend and uniform colour scheme for geological maps of the entire country.
1:50,000 Geological Map Series, Geological Quadrangle Maps, Mineral Belt Map Series, Geological & Mineral Maps of States, District Resource Map Series and other geological thematic maps are notable GIS-enabled map products. Generation of a seamless 1:50000 geological maps for entire country, which involves an edge-matched mosaic of over 5000 toposheets, are currently underway. The geodata-base for this seamless map would comprise 31 layers linked to attribute tables, to enable queries under GIS. The map products of GSI are proposed to be placed on public domain shortly through the portal of GSI Enterprise currently being developed.
GSI undertook World Bank-funded 'Jaldhatri' and 'Jaldhara' projects for water resource development, wherein GIS-enabled geological thematic map layers are created and integrated with topo-base supplied by Survey of India. Convinced of GSI's capability in GIS, requests have come from CGMW to undertake publication of two international maps namely Geological Map of Asia (lGMA 5000) and Geo-hazards Map of Asia, compilations of which are underway.
