Abstract: The Power Distribution sector plays a very important and vital role in the economic development of a country. The main focus of the power sector reforms is on the weakest part of the chain i.e. Distribution System, Energy Accounting, Billing and Revenue management to improve the financial health of the utilities to improve the quality of services to the consumer. Since distribution system are having high distribution losses, poor voltage condition and frequent interruption, network documentation and loss assessment study becomes essential for the overall improvement of the system.
Due to this, accurate and reliable data management system using appropriate technology based on GIS assumes significance. GIS can effectively manage information on the distribution of electricity to customers and information describing the attributes of each customer such as location, sanctioned load, load category and source of supply. GIS could be a valuable tool not only for mapping facilities but for improved decision-making, better asset infrastructure and above all identifying source of T&D losses.
The major areas in which power utilities can be benefited from GIS are Consumer Indexing (CI), Network Mapping, Distribution Network Modeling, Load Flow Analysis and Meter management. The paper discusses how GIS can effectively manage information on the distribution of electricity to customers and information, describing the attributes of each customer such as location and electricity use. The paper explains the role of GIS technology in determining technical loss, network planning, optimization of distribution system and load forecasting, and the resulting advantages of faster and improved decision-making.
