Electricity generation from renewable sources is sustainable, free from carbon emissions. In India total electricity generation is approximately 3.5% (amounting to 550 BkWh in 2003) of the total worlds electricity. In it the share renewable energy other than hydel is less than 1% only. In terms of installed electricity capacity of 1,26,000MW the share of renewable energy was 1,750MW i.e. about 1.5%. Projections indicate that installed capacity from renewable energy sources should become 10% of the total installed capacity say about 20,000 MW by the year 2015. Achieving these targets through solar and wind energies would require enormous land area besides technology and other resources

A mapping system using geographical information system (GIS) can help to establish viable renewable resource based electricity generation. Until 1990s, application of GIS based integrated information has been a privilege of defense services. The cost of satellite data has been high and data dissemination was largely restricted. However, as we enter in the 21st century the policy structure becomes favorable and satellite data are becoming affordable. Consequently various other applications of geospatial technologies are getting attention and one of them is mapping of sources of green energy. This paper describes the expansion and optimal utilization of renewable energy resources development for solar, wind and geothermal energies though application of GIS technologies. Current and future scenario is presented.
