A utility normally has a lot of information in spatial and non spatial data formats in a non integrated environment. This information resides in various enterprise systems like Work Management System, Billing System, customer information system, which becomes almost vertical silos. Earlier in a non competitive environment, it was not necessary to integrate all these modules together but today as the utilities is moving towards a more competitive and profit focused business environment hence for becoming market leader it is mandatory to analyze all the functions of a utility in an integrated and unified perspective, for instance today it is very important that a new scheme or design preparation should optimize on both design and commercial parameters and this can only be achieved when a GIS system, Engineering Design System and a Commercial systems all integrated together to provide the vital inputs.
In essence on technology basis we can club all spatial and design info into GIS and a-spatial info like commercial consideration in an ERP system. Thus while integrating GIS with the ERP system, it is critical that the right tool is chosen in conjunction with a well thought strategy. It is also very important that the business process of the utility, which is needed to meet the end results of the Integration, is also formalized, articulated and documented. This paper addresses the need, benefits and the challenges of GIS integrations with the ERP systems.
