Due to urban development and migration of population from rural to urban areas, there is a need to use the land resources cautiously. For efficient utilization of resources, some methods are employed to do the analysis whether the site is suitable for the purpose or not. GIS is a capable tool employed in this analysis. Suitability analysis is performed by calculating weighted average of different criteria. Weights of criteria depend upon their relative importance and obtaining their value is a classic problem in this field. Here, a method is suggested to calculate relative importance of criteria. Criteria weights are assumed as variables and sufficient number of sites is located with known suitability value. Then, suitability analysis is employed for each of the located sites and a set of linear equations are obtained. The set of linear equations is solved to get criteria weights. These weights are used to generate suitability map. This method was used for selecting solid waste dumping site for Dehradoon area.
