Petrol is a resource that literally fuels the world’s economy, and the companies that drill, refine and distribute petrol face huge investment risks in their search for oil. Oil companies mitigate this risk by extensively using geological research when searching for potential oil fields.
The retail side of the petrol business is one area where petrol companies can gain complete information on competitor presence and therefore make retail decisions based on complete knowledge of the existing market conditions.
A leading UK based provider of petrol filling stations (PFS) database management solutions approached RMSI to create a nation-wide database of petrol filling stations for 47 key city markets and approximately 30,000 kms of Indian national highways of strategic importance. RMSI collected market survey data supported with traffic counts, photographs, GPS locations and digital mapping for approximately 8,300 petrol filling stations belonging to the various oil companies in India and converted it into a comprehensive and integrated database.
The live project executed by RMSI included the creation of digital map and database using MapInfo, AutoCAD, Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, Paint shop Pro and Photoshop softwares for petrol filling stations for major national highways across India.
The PFS database acts as a central warehouse of information and is being used by the client for:
·Retail network planning decision support ·Strategic organization-wide information resource ·Competition analysis ·Identifying best capital deployment opportunities
