Rapid pace of development and resulting need of expansion and up-gradation of infrastructure poses serious challenge to urban
planners. Existing utilities represent huge investment and their upkeep and maintenance is of prime importance.
To be
able to maintain the existing utilities, record creation is the first step. GIS and associated tools of geophysics provide
solutions for creating accurate maps of the buried utilities. All the buries services like water lines, sewer lines, gas
pipes, telecommunication cables, electric cables etc., can be accurately detected and placed on computerized maps using
integrated approach involving remote sensing, GIS, GPS and Geophysics. These maps provide the much needed data for planning
and maintenance.
Various latest technologies allow repair and strengthening of weakening pipes, water and sewer. The
replacement of these pipes can be extremely costly and impossible in many cases, especially in congested urban areas. These
techniques allow creation of almost a new and stronger pipe within the old ones, in case damages are too severe. Else
strengthening of old pipes can be taken up for longer service life.
The paper discusses various techniques and latest
developments in the field of identification of buried utilities, preparation of accurate maps, repairs and maintenance of old
weak or damaged pipes.
