ABSTRACT
The impact of natural calamities on the environment is of grave concern as it affects the culture and livelihood of all the inhabitants.

This paper attempts to study the changes in the vegetation of Ersama and its surrounding areas, Jagatsighpur, Orissa, following the cyclone disaster of 1999. Ersama was one of the areas most affected by the cyclone. The present study is a continuation of a study using GIS and Remote-sensing in change detection analysis in the vegetational cover taking both pre-cyclone and post cyclone data of Ersama.

High-resolution satellite data are used for generation of maps as well as for data on vegetation and climatic changes. Temporal multi-spectral data show reduction in vegetation. The management plan has been prepared using natural resource data and other parameters, which indicates the alternative land utilization for controlling afforestation and management of an area.
