Lineament analysis of the edge-enhanced images of Landsat Thematic mapper (ETM) for Balouchestan area of east Iran has defined major N-S and a NW-SE sets of lineaments. To highlight the lineaments, ETM bands 4, 5, and 7 of the area were edge-enhanced by 3 by 3 asymmetric filter kernels with different illumination directions. A color composite of N-S filtered ETM 4 (blue), NW-SE filtered ETM 5 (green), and NE-SW filtered ETM 7 (red) was constructed. All the filtered images and the color composite show the filtered lineaments well, but the topography is not well defined. To retain the general topography of the area and at the same time highlight the lineaments, edge-enhanced images are added back to the original bands and then combined to form a color composite.
Lineaments in the study area are believed to be due to erosion along fractures, either faults or sets of joints. The azimuth frequency of these lineaments indicates that there are two major groups of lineaments in the studied area. Based on all the information acquired from the lineament analysis of the edge-enhances ETM images and the field study using GPS system for fracture analyzing, a tectonic model for the evolution of the region has been developed.
