Abstract

Geographic Information System (GIS) is becoming prime needs for most of the application areas in today’s world. It is spreading its roots in almost all fields. One such field is “Mineral Exploration”.

Minerals are used for manufacturing of some medicinal products, consumer products, decorative ornaments, also for power generation. One of the mineral power generation sources is Lignite, which is available in plenty of in Gujarat, and many explorations are going on for the same. Explorations for other major and minor minerals are also going on in Gujarat.

“Commissionerate of Geology and Mining” put on efforts in collaboration with “Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Application and Geo Informatics (BISAG)” to create “Mineral Information System” using GIS for mapping major and minor minerals in Gujarat State, which has five parts in it. Those five parts are: (i) Histogram Entry (that is manually data is entered into the table for creating histograms), (ii) Digitization, (iii) Software development, (iv) Mineral Atlas and (v) Database Normalization.

Project was carried out for Volumetric Analysis of Mineral (Lignite), for data collected from South of Gujarat State using GIS. To develop 3D surface of mineral for visualization, thickness of mineral and Over-Burden (OBR), so one can have idea of thickness of OBR to dig out against volume of Mineral. This part was carried out using ArcMap and ArcScene.

Further, Database for the Mineral Atlas of Gujarat State is Normalized (Standardized) for attaching all information (Attributes) needed for all types of major and minor minerals. And code is developed for Mineral Atlas to create three-dimensional surface model on one button click/less button click using Arc-Objects.
