India is a developing nation and the gap between the demand and supply of energy is very high and this gap is widening further. Conventional Energy sources are on the edge of depletion and their cost is increasing day by day. This stimulates the transition to renewable energy resources to meet the growing energy requirement. Wind Energy being cleaner and safer is the potential source of energy for the 21st century. The analytical capabilities of the Geographic Information System (GIS) along with its spatial analysis functions make it a powerful decision-making. GIS coupled with Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry can be used for Model Development & Evaluation and can be effectively used for windmill site Selection, setup of transmission lines, wind farm development etc. This paper focuses on the application of GIS in data collection & database development, various analysis techniques for windmill site selection, and energy transmission, which aids effective usage of wind energy. It also identifies the limitations in windmill erection and addresses these limitations with the help of GIS. This paper is an attempt to describe a methodology for harnessing wind energy using GIS, which is the path to our future energy solutions.
