Gujarat State has one of the longest coastline of around 1600 kms in the country. It is an attractive coast and is endowed with a varied landscape. There are a number of activities, viz. salt industries, cement industries, oil and natural gas exploration, brackish water aquaculture, load on harbours due to import-export trade besides the growing population all along the coast. This puts a tremendous pressure on the coastal zone, which necessitates a proper Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) for developmental planning to sustain the environment.
In view of this, Coastal Zone Information System (CZIS) project was undertaken at BISAG, Gandhinagar for preparation of CZMP for Department of Forests and Environment, Government of Gujarat, Gandhinagar. CZIS application is developed by customisation of ARCMAP using ArcObjects
The main objective of CZIS is to design and develop user-friendly GIS software to retrieve spatial and non spatial information to generate a coastal zone Management Plan (CZMP). This will provide decision support tool for implementing CRZ notification to planners and administrators and to create user specific outputs.
Coastal Zone Information System has three main components (utilization capabilities):
(i) An Information Retrieval System (IRS) (ii) Analysis/Modelling Tool for Coastal Zone Management Planning (ATCZMP) (iii) Map Output Generation System (MOGS)
As an IRS, CZIS can be used to retrieve all the information created in the database in a user-friendly manner. As an ATCZMP, CZIS takes up the task of generating land use information up to 500m from High Tide Line (HTL) and Wetland information between Low Tide Line (LTL) and HTL, and zoning the coastal area into distinct zones (CRZ-I, II, III, IV) using analysis/Modelling in GIS environment. As an MOGS, CZIS can be used for output Map Generation for Landuse and /or Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ).
