This paper provides a detailed discussion of an open framework of interface and encoding standards developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) to enable technology products to work together for data sharing and application throughout the enterprise. The paper discusses OGC’s recent extension of its open standards framework to address the discovery, access, and application of web-resident sensors and related sensor information. Sensors and sensor arrays can be registered in catalogs with metadata that enable services to read a sensor’s characteristics and to control and receive data from the sensor, whether it is a simple water quality monitor or a complex satellite imaging system. Outputs from multiple sensors can be aggregated, fused and applied to a diversity of geospatial visualization and analytic decision support processes. Stored sensor data can also be discovered and accessed. These new capabilities will be useful for a wide range of user communities, including Emergency Management/Emergency Response, Research, Security, Aviation, facilities operation / management, and Remote Sensing.
