Abstract In urban applications, land use/cover maps are usually used for planning and for decision making. The usefulness of these maps are greatly reduced if they are not up to date. However, producing and up-dating maps by traditional techniques take a long time and requires a high budget, and since the users need to up-date the maps regularly and continuously, the use of traditional techniques are not practical. With Remote Sensing, one can reduce the time and budgeting of map updating without affecting the accuracy, especially using the new generation of high resolution satellites, which provide us with high quality imagery at a low cost. In this paper, the possibility of urban map updating will be demonstrated. The methodology developed is explained, starting from the planning phase through processing, up to the final product. The paper also evaluates the accuracy of the obtained results.
