Changes in business demands, advancement in technology, increased operational efficiency requirement and better management of risks in an increasingly competitive environment are all factors that necessitate migration of GIS applications and database in an enterprise. One of the direct benefits of such migration of legacy GIS System to the new enterprise-wide systems is improvement in productivity, with streamlining of business process and seamless integration of migrated geospatial applications with mainstream IT systems. This paper focuses on the challenges and benefits of technology migration. It outlines typical GIS enabled enterprise-wide solution architecture with possibilities of middleware development, integrating GIS with other enterprise systems.
