Airborne Data Collection over existing High Tension (275kV/500kV) overhead transmission powerlines for
Tenaga National Berhad (TNB). A pilot project by TNB Transmission unit of Tenaga National Berhad in
year 2004 which involved the flying of Laser & Thermal IR/Video sensors mounted on airborne platforms.
The sensors were flown on two different airborne platforms; fixed-wing for the laser scanner & Bell Long-
Ranger helicopter for the Thermal IR/Video sensor. The flying was done over a stretch of about 810 km
long high tension (275kV/500kV) overhead conductors. TNB’s main objective was to gather sufficient data
and information needed to maintain a reliable electricity supply to its customers and to ensure the
conductors do not touch any tree beneath and adjacent to the transmission lines. The other objective of
the survey was to identify any anomalies along the transmission lines using thermal IR sensor. The
presentation will highlight on the rapid acquisition of the data capture and the usefulness of the data to
TNB in meeting their pilot study requirements.
