Pressing need for change in roles of governmental mapping agencies in national interest
Brig. (Dr.) B.C. Roy Director, Map Publication
The Cartographic systems/organisations, currently in vogue, at state or national level, are finding it increasingly difficult to cope up with the needs and aspirations of Public. The requirements of current and adequately accurate information of diversified and complex nature force us to think in terms of revamping/modernising the prevalent systems drastically with a view to make them available to various organisations / institutions in the most economical, faster and convenient manner for optimal Resources Management.
The matter is becoming more and more urgent with the passage of time as the needy agencies can no longer wait for considerable period of time for the information to come to them. With the advancement in digital technology and cost prohibitive information collection systems, we have to seriously consider in terms of making drastic changes in Data collection, processing, updation, storage, supply & maintenance systems; map projection system and the structures of cartographic organisations. Integrated approach in data collection and multipurpose use will have to be given priority in our considerations. The existing age-old systems of cadastral mapping & Land cadastre needs to be moderenised bringing it from analogous to Digital domain. The objective of doing so is to improve accuracy & currency in Cadastral Information with a view to provide hassle free one window service to public. This also calls for change in the projection system of Cadastral maps to provide national connectivity for its eventual use in establishing multipurpose GIS/LIS at different levels of Government hierarchy. The above mentioned objectives can be achieved only by modifying the existing roles of National mapping agency and State Government Cadastral mapping agencies. | ||
