Abstract

The distributed computing and its applications are demand of modern society. Due to advancements in technology the data and information are shared through services rather than physical transfer of data which is very effective and practical way of information sharing in multi-user environment. In geospatial community various initiatives have been taken for the development of spatial data infrastructure (SDI) for specific purpose and need. The OGC compliant web services are frontier in geospatial community for development of any SDI. The data and process interoperability can be achieved through web services and open source GIS solutions. In the web service based data sharing system the host organizations are distributed at various locations and provide their respective data in the form of XML document and gets published as service. The recent advancements in web services and distributed computing the process and analytical capabilities can also be shared and published among the user community. The OGC compliant WPS and other related standards make it possible. The development of geo-data processing system in distributed GIS environment is one of the challenging and emerging area in GIS community. In this architecture the distributed database available in web service format can be processed and analysed based on user requirement, and a geo-spatial product can be derived using existing model or data processing system available at client or server end. The distributed computing environment can be an ideal and effective system for emergency/disaster management, where the role of real time data and information becomes very crucial to make a decision and management plan. The Indian Bio-resource Information Network (IBIN) is one of the major initiative of Government of India for sharing and distributing of bio-resource data of the country at various levels using distributed computing environment. In future, the distributed geo-processing system will allow various analyses and modeling capability to its user for bio-resource management, biodiversity conservation and various other scientific studies. In this paper we are presenting various possible applications and technological solutions for geo-spatial data analysis, modeling and processing using distributed GIS network.
