Abstract :
The National Coordination Agency for Surveys and Mapping (BAKOSURTANAL) of Indonesia, has been developing a Marine Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI) as part of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure. The MSDI is intended to facilitate users on finding, evaluating and obtaining marine spatial data for their own purposes. Users are categorize into Bakosurtanal’s internal and external users. In the future, the MSDI will play an important role in supporting coastal and marine activities as Indonesia is an archipelagic country where 2/3 of its territory consist of water.
BAKOSURTANAL has developing several components of MSDI, as follows:
- Marine and coastal spatial database managed in Oracle 9i with Spatial Data Option (Oracle Spatial). The database has been designed to have seamless, multi-users, multi-purposes, and interoperable characteristics.
- National Spatial Metadata System.
- Implementing internationally accepted spatial standard such as IHO-S57 (hydrographic fundamental dataset), FGDC spatial metadata content standard, as well as national standard (topographic fundamental dataset).
- Web-based GIS to enable users on finding and evaluating Bakosurtanal’s marine spatial data.
- User-specific applications that utilize the spatial data stored in the database for tailoring coastal map, nautical chart, electronic navigational chart (ENC), as well as any other marine and coastal GIS applications.
This article presents the current status of the development as well as further development plan of Marine SDI in Indonesia.
