Abstract
The Universal No-Projection Seamless Mapping (UNSM) system is based on “bird-eye-view” of the Earth’s surface in small size ellipsoidal trapezoids. At the poles, the smaller side will be zero and it will become a triangular trapezoid. Each trapezoid is mapped individually as flat trapezium (or triangle) independently of the adjoining neighbor.
The smaller the area size, the flatter will be the trapezoid. Keeping the trapezium sides equal to the actual lengths of the latitudinal or longitudinal arcs of the corresponding trapezoid, distortions due to flattening of the bulge will be practically negligible for topographic maps and charts. In case of cadastral plats, the distortion will be zero. The trapeziums and/or triangles are not converted to squares or rectangles and maps will thus have true North and meter. There will be no discontinuity in coordinates between maps, adjoining or far apart..
The Earth’s ellipsoidal surface is mapped as a mosaic producing seamless flat maps from pole to pole and round the globe.
