Abstract
Urban areas expand very rapidly in Thailand, especially in the big cities where the economic and social developments are growing continuously. Chiang Mai is the third largest city in Thailand. The main objective of research is to study the urban development and urban extension as well as the change of other land use (Agriculture, Forest, Water body and Miscellaneous land) to urban area during two periods (1988 to 2002) by using resolution enhancement technique which a medium-resolution of LANDSAT and high-resolution of SPOT-HRV and IRS/1D-PAN images were registered precisely. The result from this technique showed increasing of sharp linear feature and edges of built-up area that were most useful to extract the spatial features by visual Interpretation. In addition, understanding of local cultural practices, knowledge of topography and ground information are essential for making of an accurate urban land use map.
Study of urban extension by study sites, it was found that in a period of 14 years, Chiang Mai has an extension of 68.3 square kilometer. Most land use categories which have been changed to urban are agricultural area.
