Abstract

As cities develop rapidly on the global stage, so must the maps that aid millions of navigation device users and pedestrians who count on the most-up-to-date and accurate maps to take them where they want to go and what they want to do. With wireless connectivity, users will increasingly rely on useful and relevant location-based content such as traffic flow conditions, fuel prices, parking and enhanced visual content. This session will examine the key factors and emerging technologies that will drive the success for location-based services and applications. It will discuss the emerging technologies that contribute to the network of reliable sources helping to keep pace and anticipate changes in India’s road systems. Accuracy is a mission-critical necessity that will provide reliable maps and navigational capabilities. As map content becomes enhanced with the integration of 3D visual content – such as 3D landmarks for Indian cities, and real-time traffic information becomes available throughout the country, the user’s navigation experience is greatly enhanced as well. But without quality maps that provide the most accurate and uptodate content, location-based services will be rendered useless. Emerging technologies such as community based input, will also play a prominent role in the future, as part of the geographical information network that powers the world’s maps on mobile phones, navigation devices and in-car systems.
