Abstract:
Most of the hydrological research activities which are held in Iran are based only on the contour maps in the analogue form. From the other side, a hydrological model requires rich and dense information about the earth surface elevation of the interested region which can not be fully provided by the analogue maps. Analogue maps provide raw data which comprehensive analytical analysis can not be performed over such data. This leads to uncertainties in the results, correct decision support system and management plans. To overcome such difficulties and limitations, there is a necessity for producing dense and accurate elevation models. Digital Terrain Model (DTM) is an appropriate solution for such requirements. DTM provide accurate, flexible, digital 3D data which enables geospatial and analytical analysis over the terrain surface like identification of the watershed area, physiographic and statistical amounts calculation, visualization, flood propagation model…. In this paper over a small area in Iran, the advantages and disadvantages of using DTM as a basis for the hydrological studies will be revealed. Finally the results of our proposed methodology based on DTM information against previously existing results based on analogue maps will be compared and discussed. The emphasis would be more on subjects such as: input/output format, cost, speed, accuracy, optimality, modeling, and automation level.
