One of the biggest challenges faced by mankind today is mitigation of climate change. To help mitigate
climate change, the natural sequestration process is being widely explored. In our project, we carry out a
comprehensive study on carbon sequestration and estimate it using Remote Sensing, Image Processing,
GIS, Photogrammetry and Survey. Our study area is Anna University campus, Chennai which covers an
area of 1.2 km sq. An attempt is made to compare carbon sequestrated in above ground biomass for 3
years, 1989, 2006 and 2008 respectively. GIS customization is done to visualize mapping of carbon stock
for the year 2008. A module is developed whereby automated estimation and mapping of carbon stock is
done for our study area. This is a unique project which helps us prove that Anna University campus and itssurrounding areas is one of the lungs of Chennai and helps mitigate climate change in natural ways. Thisproject is done under the kind guidance of Dr T. Natarajan, Chair Professor, Oil Industries DevelopmentBoard and Dr A. Ramachandran, Director, Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation Research, AnnaUniversity, Chennai.
