Hawk Eye II, by Airborne Hydrography AB, is an airborne lidar survey system optimised for the coastal zone. The Hawk Eye II simultaneously collects 4000 spatial separated bathymetric depth measurements (including full waveform extraction) and 64000 spatial separated topographic measurements (each up to 4 distances per measurement) per second. This is achieved by a unique system design including both topographic and bathymetric lasers working simultaneously. In addition the Hawk Eye II digital camera collects geo referenced digital images of the over flown area. This article studies the sea charting abilities of the Hawk Eye II system, based on surveys at the coast of Stavanger, Norway. Land and sea floor were surveyed at two different test sites. The depth capability of the system showed a great achievement in non-tropical coastal waters. The test sites were surveyed twice on separate days to perform a repeatability study of the laser bathymetry system. The offset between the two datasets proved to be very low and was investigated by statistical methods.
