GPS Applications

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
GIS is an integration of computer hardware and mapping software. A GIS map is a combination of many layers in which each layer holds different information. This information or data come from a database and consists of two types: spatial data and attribute data. Spatial data gives the actual location on the earth, while attribute data gives additional detailed information, such as name and description.

GIS allows the user to store data, perform complex analysis, integration, and manipulation, and moreover, allows visualization benefits according to the positions on the earth’s surface. GIS can be used on many levels, from simple mapping to performing different statistical analyses. Uses are primarily government related, town planning, local authority and public utility management, environmental, resource management, engineering, business, marketing, and distribution (n.d).

Survey and Navigation Industry
Global Positioning System (GPS) is a constellation of satellites that broadcast signals to derive precise timing, location and velocity information (n.d.). It can calculate position accurately to within meters or even centimeters, a most essential aspect for surveying work.

This data, along with GIS software, has enabled surveyors to create more detailed maps for surveys. This information, when further combined with other systems such as communications devices, computers, and software can perform a wide range of tasks. GPS, along with GIS software, can provide a reliable and efficient system for navigation, vehicle tracking, and monitoring the routes of vehicles on land and ships on rivers and oceans.

Many sectors such as defense, aviation, avionics, marine life, mining, and transportation are making utmost use of this technology for navigation and survey purposes.
