Fresh water being one of the basic necessities for sustenance of life, the human race through the ages has striven to locate and develop it.

The present average consumption for the country as a whole is 71 Lpcd; where as the minimum requirement as per standards is 135 Lpcd.

Major Portions of the Indian cities are not covered with proper water supply network. According to a survey in 1981, only 74% of the total population is having access to safe drinking water, which in later years has improved to 82%.
