Database And Methodology

Multi – temporal data are required to study the land use changes over a period of time. Also the identification of sprawls needs data pertaining to different time periods. Hence, the data used for study consisted of land use maps of city of different time periods. The study is based on both primary and secondary data sources. The former has been generated through questionnaire and field observation methods, while the later were acquired from various government and quasi- government agencies. The main sources of secondary data were various publications of Census of India, Directorate of Economic and Statistics and so on. Besides these, various reports and documents of various N.G.O.’s and other governmental agencies were referred too. District Gazetteers of Chhattisgarh and state level gazetteers were consulted for historical background.

Primary data were collected through field surveys on the basis of stratified purposive sampling. Since Raipur city is in a triangular shape- its impact on the neighbouring village needs to be assessed in all the directions. First of all, the fringe of the Raipur city has been ascertained on the basis of functions and services of the center on the hinterland. The steps of database and methodology used in the present study are given in fig above.

For the present study, Raipur City was divided into four sectors on the basis of the year in which villages merged into city i.e. 1971,1981,1991 and 2001. Once the sectors were divided, the selection of village was done in order to facilitate in-depth study. Leaving the core sector, which is already fully urbanized, two Villages have been selected from these three sectors. The basis of village selection is such that the entire tehsil gets proper representation. From each village, about 5 to 10 percent household amounting to about 15 to 30 respondents in each village were selected on the basis of purposive sampling. While selecting the households utmost care has be taken regarding the representation of major occupation type, size of holding, educational status and social position etc. Thus the respondents were selected in order to assess the differences in the occupational transformation. The survey was conducted on the basis of scheduled questionnaire. A brief summary of the final survey is given below:

Survey Schedules

Schedule No I : This schedule, besides containing miscellaneous information regarding village, its location, date of interview etc. is for recording personal and household characteristics of respondents.

Schedule No II: This includes the Land-use pattern in the village, land acquistion, resettlement, provision and monetary compensation

Schedule No III it deals with the occupational transformation

Scheduled IV this is meant for information on civic amenities.

After completing the field survey of six of selected villages, the processing of data was taken up by using simple statistical techniques, such as working out simple percentages, frequencies that were possible to apply and workout manually. Cartographic techniques are used for showing trends and spatial pattern of distribution. Computer technique, for working out some of simple percentages and frequencies is also used. Scoring schemes has also been used for assessing literacy level of respondents and their household mapping purpose Arcview and Autocad software are used.
