Dear Readers,

Galileo, the Europe's answer to GPS of U.S is scheduled to be operational in 2008. Galileo is supposed to a deploy spectrum similarly used for GPS military use, implying that it will be difficult to jam any Galileo signal without disturbing the GPS signal. Many countries including India and China formally pledged its participation in the European Union's Galileo satellite navigation system in November last year. It is likely that Brazil is shall join the bandwagon too. Indian officials estimated a 350-million-dollar Indian stake in the 3.2 billion Euro European satellite project with their Chinese counterparts estimating a 300-million-dollar stake.

However, the reported discomfort level of US with Galileo is disturbing. It will be interesting to see if Galileo survives the pressures and consequences of the uni-polar world.

Similarity transformations for GPS heighting
M N J P Vella
Orthometric heights traditionally are determined through optical methods involving the transfer of height difference from a datum point to the unknown point, where the orthometric height is required. This can sometimes be a very arduous task and now with the advent and proliferation of the use of the Global Positioning System. However, this paper tries to prove that this task realistically seems more possible now than ever before…

Technologies of soft-GPS receivers
Danish Ahmad
The technologies discussed in this paper can make mobile devices capable of providing positioning by using the same civil GPS satellite signals at low cost additional components. This informative paper takes a mathematical, software-based approach explaining the software components involved in the process of position determination. A recommended reading...

Environmental case study of Cauvery river floodplain
S Anbazhagan and P Dash
Moving away from GPS and related discussions, this paper is about understanding the various environmental issues in the Cauvery floodplain zone near Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India with the help of RS and GIS techniques. Remote Sensing and GIS are extensively used for studying environment, geomorphology and land use/land cover mapping in the floodplain zone. The paper coming from IIT Mumbai is an interesting case application…

Research Articles

From GTS to GPS
Dr Prithvish Nag and Brig. B Nagrajan
This article is an interesting contribution from the Surveyor General of India Dr P Nag and the Director of the Geodetic & Research Branch of Survey of India, Brig. B Nagrajan. These eminent personalities conjure up a discussion that compares the results of distances measured between the baseline with old instruments with re-measuring the same distances with GPS and reducing the results to Everest Spheroid. It concludes that the measurements done two hundred years ago by Major William Lambton and Sir George Everest still holds good. The Great Trigonometric Survey (GTS) still can put up a strong challenge to any modern techniques in terms of accuracy and basics.

GPS, GIS helps save lives of Bangalore citizens
V Madhusudhana
Road accidents have become a common sight on the city roads, and in such a scenario an efficient and fast emergency ambulance service is the need of the hour. For the city of Bangalore, India, this need has been fulfilled by the setting up of the Comprehensive Trauma Consortium, which utilises state-of-the-art technologies in its fleet of ambulances to provide instant care to accident victims. V Madhusudhana in this paper under the able guidance of Dr N K Venketaramana, gives a small but important case of location based service that addresses basic needs.

The plan for development of data exchange standards
Ramin Yousefi
This article by the Head of GIS Control Section of National Cartographic Centre (NCC) Iran, stresses on the need for establishing data exchange standards to ensure easy process of spatial data exchange in Iran. It highlights classification of items for data exchange process and criteria for selection of strategy to develop data standards. It puts forth an interesting roadmap for the development of such standards…

Conference Proceedings Online

In its continued dedication towards bringing the synergism and coordination of various stakeholders in the Geo-informatics field, GIS Development collaborates and brings to all its visitors, full proceedings of conferences and events across the globe online (for free). This month a number of conference proceedings have been uploaded with detailed papers for all sections of these conferences. For elaborate listing and readings visit our very popular Proceedings section.

1) GITA Oil and Gas Conference (2000, 2001, 2002)

GITA’s “GIS for Oil & Gas Conference” is the only one of its kind, devoted exclusively to applications and technologies for upstream/downstream oil and gas industries including, Exploration and Production, Gathering, Land/Lease, Pipeline and Retail, Refining, and Marketing. It is held each September in Houston, Texas, the center of the oil and gas pipeline industry in the USA. The 1998 conference was the first held under GITA’s exclusive management. In 2002, GIS Development came in an strategic alliance with GITA.

2) Digital Earth 2003

The third international symposium on Digital Earth was held at Brno, Czech Republic in September 2003. It dealt with: Earth observation and processing technologies for Digital Earth, the meaning of sustainability and policy of its formulation, delivery, monitoring and evaluation in the conditions of the Information Society. Other important parts of the symposium were the Global Society Dialogue as well as e-government, e-governance and e-parliament as accompanying factors of a networked knowledge society. The complete proceedings at one place are put forth for you.

3) ACRS (1980, 2002)

‘Asian Conference on Remote Sensing’ is an annual conference, which is held under the auspices of Asian Association on Remote Sensing. AARS was formed in 1981, and its principal activity is to hold the Asian Conference on Remote Sensing. The Association also conducts other remote sensing activities consistent with its aims. The first ACRS was held in 1980 in Bangkok. We bring you the proceedings of the first ACRS and the latest in 2002 as the latest entry.
