India Surges Ahead...

Welcome to the various additions and updates of GIS Development portal of the month of Februaury 2004.

Recently GIS Development endeavoured to interact with certain sectors of the GIS community in India. 'Interact' in the form of interviews and discussions. This lead to some interesting observations. We bring you this month in a section below that puts forth the voices of these various sectors. In crux, an opinion is coming out strongly on the need of indigenous GIS, not only for the Indian market but also for the global market. Academicians insist on more compatible interface between industry and academia and tend to do away the present scenario where industry retrains the professionals to suit their needs. However, there is a concern not to end up in producing technicians rather than experts. If there is a realization that the line between IT and GIS is getting blurred, the introduction of GIS course as a major field still has to go a long way in most of the institutions.

There are certain issues which have assumed a sense of permanency figured again such as unreasonable restrictions on the maps and digital data, availability of accurate and up-to-date spatial data in standard format, affordability of technology, lack of trained and skilled manpower, capacity building, etc. However, issues pertaining to data ownership and need of adequate regulations to check data pilferage and piracy have also come into focus.

Despite all, there is a change and that is a significant one. The Government of India starts speaking a language that is digital: the Survey of India claims to digitize all the 1:50,000 scale maps and enters in partnerships with private sector; the Department of Space wants to touch the moon; the Geological Survey of India initiates the process to build up an organizational network infrastructure and enterprise cum information portal; the Forest Survey of India says that it uses state of the art techniques in forest cover assessment; the National Informatic Center moves from developing standalone systems to providing web based GIS solutions...

And it is said that an Indian NSDI is on the anvil! Sounds like a surge?

Sections:

Thesis

GIS Development, in its continued focus towards developing coordination of various stakeholders in the Geo-informatics arena and spreading the works and knowledge created to the right beneficiaries, have recently made an important addition in its Thesis section.

In the thesis submitted to the Faculty of SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome, Prasad Salunkhe, speaks of GPS technology as one of the significant inventions of the twentieth century. It points out that GPS has become a popular device in western countries but has not yet reached the household of the common man in India. This thesis studies what are the factors that prevent GPS from being used widely in India. The problems faced by GPS/GIS vendors in tapping the GPS market in India are also addressed.

Downloads

We also welcome you to the Downloads section of GIS Development. The section holds numerous downloadable applications and software catgorised into nine technology heads. A recent addition to the section is ScanMagic. We also invite you to write to us to get your downloadable tool enlisted here.

ScanMagic
ScanMagic is a software application for the visualizing, analyzing and processing remote sensing data. In most of the cases, ScanMagic makes it possible to carry out a complete range of activities on preparation of Earth remote sensing output products without application of additional software tools.

India Surges Ahead…

Conference Proceedings Online

In its continued dedication towards bringing the synergism and coordination of various stakeholders in the Geo-informatics field, GIS Development collaborates and brings to all its visitors, full proceedings of conferences and events across the globe online (for free). This month a number of conference proceedings have been uploaded with detailed papers for all sections of these conferences. For elaborate listing and readings visit our very popular Proceedings section.

1) GITA Oil and Gas Conference (2000, 2001, 2002)

GITA’s “GIS for Oil & Gas Conference” is the only one of its kind, devoted exclusively to applications and technologies for upstream/downstream oil and gas industries including, Exploration and Production, Gathering, Land/Lease, Pipeline and Retail, Refining, and Marketing. It is held each September in Houston, Texas, the center of the oil and gas pipeline industry in the USA. The 1998 conference was the first held under GITA’s exclusive management. In 2002, GIS Development came in an strategic alliance with GITA.

2) Digital Earth 2003

The third international symposium on Digital Earth was held at Brno, Czech Republic in September 2003. It dealt with: Earth observation and processing technologies for Digital Earth, the meaning of sustainability and policy of its formulation, delivery, monitoring and evaluation in the conditions of the Information Society. Other important parts of the symposium were the Global Society Dialogue as well as e-government, e-governance and e-parliament as accompanying factors of a networked knowledge society. The complete proceedings at one place are put forth for you.
